Free Security Camera Software for Windows

You can turn a Windows PC into a security camera system without a monthly subscription. Use SecureView if you have network IP cameras (ONVIF or RTSP), or Webcam Capture if you want to use USB or built-in webcams. Both detect motion, record to your PC and can back up to OneDrive.

Key terms explained

ONVIF
ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) is an industry standard that lets IP cameras, recorders and viewing software from different manufacturers discover each other and work together. An ONVIF-compatible camera can be added to any ONVIF-compatible app, such as SecureView.
RTSP
RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) is a network protocol used to request and control live video streams. Most IP cameras publish an RTSP URL, for example rtsp://192.168.1.20:554/stream1, that video software can open to show the live feed.
PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom)
PTZ describes a camera that can be moved remotely: pan (left/right), tilt (up/down) and zoom (in/out). PTZ cameras can be controlled through ONVIF from compatible software.
WS-Discovery
WS-Discovery (Web Services Dynamic Discovery) is the protocol ONVIF uses to find cameras on a local network automatically, so you do not have to type in each camera's IP address.
NVR (network video recorder)
An NVR is a device or program that records video from IP cameras. Software such as SecureView lets a Windows PC act as the recorder instead of a separate NVR box.
Motion detection sensitivity
Motion detection sensitivity controls how much change between video frames counts as motion. Higher sensitivity catches smaller movements but produces more false alarms from shadows, rain or insects.
Detection mask (motion zone)
A detection mask marks parts of the camera image to ignore, such as a busy road or swaying trees, so motion detection only reacts to the areas you care about.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my Windows PC as a security camera recorder?

Yes. Apps like SecureView (for IP cameras) and Webcam Capture (for webcams) turn a Windows PC into a recorder that detects motion and saves footage to your own drive, without a cloud subscription.

Do I need an NVR if I use SecureView?

No. SecureView connects directly to ONVIF or RTSP cameras on your network and records on the PC, so the PC takes the role an NVR would normally play.

Which is better for home security: a webcam or an IP camera?

IP cameras are better for permanent coverage because they can be mounted anywhere on your network, often work outdoors and at night, and do not tie up a PC's USB ports. Webcams are fine for watching a single room near the PC.

Do these apps upload my video to the cloud?

No, not by default. Both apps save recordings on your PC. OneDrive backup is optional and uploads directly to your own Microsoft account.
