To turn a webcam into a security camera on Windows, install webcam surveillance software such as Webcam Capture, add your USB or built-in webcam, turn on motion detection, and choose what happens when movement is seen: record video, save photos, send an email or sound an alarm. It takes about 10 minutes and needs no extra hardware.

Why use a webcam for home security?

Traditional security systems can mean buying cameras, paying for installation and signing up for a monitoring or cloud plan. A webcam you already own, paired with the right software, gives you a free starting point:

  • No new hardware. Use a USB webcam or your laptop's built-in camera.
  • No monthly fees. Recordings are saved to your own PC.
  • Quick to set up. Most people are monitoring within 10 minutes.

Webcams are limited by cable length and usually lack night vision, so they are best for watching a room near the PC. For doors, gardens and driveways, compare the options in Webcam vs IP Camera for Home Security: Which Is Right for You?.

Step-by-step: set up webcam surveillance with Webcam Capture

  1. Install Webcam Capture

Open the Microsoft Store on Windows 10 or 11, search for Webcam Capture by ZenByte Apps and select Get.

  2. Add your webcam

Select the + (Add Camera) button, choose your webcam from the list and give it a nickname such as "Living Room".

  3. Choose video quality

Pick a resolution and frame rate. Higher resolution shows more detail but uses more disk space. Select a microphone if you want audio in recordings.

  4. Turn on monitoring

Under Monitoring settings, choose Motion detection (or Face detection), set the detection level and enable "Highlight detected motion area on preview".

  5. Set alerts and backup

Open Email notification settings to get an email when motion is detected, and connect OneDrive if you want recordings uploaded automatically.

  6. Start monitoring

Select Start Monitoring on the camera. Walk past to test it, then check the activity log for the saved photos and video.

What features should webcam security software have?

  • Adjustable motion detection so you catch real events without constant false alarms.
  • Automatic recording and snapshots the moment motion is detected.
  • Instant alerts by email, plus an optional audio alarm to deter intruders.
  • Local storage with optional cloud backup so you own your footage. Webcam Capture can upload to your OneDrive.
  • Multiple cameras. Webcam Capture previews up to 4 webcams at once.
  • An activity log showing every recording, photo and alert with timestamps.

Best practices for webcam security at home or in the office

  • Position the webcam to cover the entry point of the room, not just the middle of it.
  • Keep lighting consistent. Most webcams need some light; a small lamp on a timer helps at night.
  • Keep the PC awake. Set Windows to never sleep while plugged in, and let the app launch at startup.
  • Protect your privacy. Only monitor spaces you are entitled to record, and tell people who live or work there.
  • Plan storage. Motion-triggered recording keeps disk use low. See our storage guide for estimates.

When to upgrade to IP cameras

If you need to cover outdoor areas, several rooms, or monitor in the dark, move to IP cameras that support ONVIF. Our free SecureView app records up to 8 of them on a Windows 11 PC. Start with How to View IP Cameras on Windows 11 for Free (No Cloud Needed).

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my laptop camera as a security camera?

Yes. Webcam Capture works with built-in laptop cameras as well as USB webcams. Keep the laptop plugged in and set Windows not to sleep while monitoring.

Is webcam surveillance software free?

Webcam Capture is free to download from the Microsoft Store, with optional in-app purchases. It records to your PC, so there is no cloud storage fee.

Will the webcam record when the PC is asleep?

No. Monitoring only runs while Windows is awake. Set Settings > System > Power to never sleep when plugged in, and enable "Launch application at Windows startup" in Webcam Capture.

How do I reduce false alarms from a webcam?

Lower the motion detection level, avoid pointing the webcam at windows with moving trees or traffic, and keep lighting steady. Face detection can also cut down alerts from pets and shadows.

Can I watch several webcams at once?

Yes. Webcam Capture can preview up to 4 webcams at the same time in a grid.
