Duplicate File Cleaner Pro features for reclaiming disk space on Windows

To free up disk space on Windows 11, start with Settings > System > Storage: remove temporary files, apply cleanup recommendations and turn on Storage Sense. Then uninstall apps you don't use, clear old Downloads, remove duplicate files with a tool such as Duplicate File Cleaner Pro, and move large media to another drive or OneDrive.

First, see what is using your space

Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows 11 breaks down usage by category: apps, temporary files, documents, pictures, videos and more. Select Show more categories to see everything. Knowing where the space goes tells you which of the methods below will help most.

10 safe ways to free up disk space

1. Remove temporary files

In Settings > System > Storage, select Temporary files. Tick items such as Windows Update Cleanup, Delivery Optimization files and Temporary files, then choose Remove files. Check whether Downloads is ticked before you continue, because it holds your own files.

2. Use cleanup recommendations

Under Storage, open Cleanup recommendations. Windows suggests large or unused files, files already synced to the cloud, and apps you rarely use. Review each suggestion before removing it.

3. Turn on Storage Sense

Storage Sense (Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense) automatically deletes temporary files and can empty the Recycle Bin and clear old Downloads on a schedule you choose.

4. Remove previous Windows installations

After a major Windows update, a Previous Windows installation(s) item can take many gigabytes. If you are happy with the update, remove it from Temporary files. Don't delete the Windows.old folder by hand.

5. Run Disk Cleanup for system files

Type Disk Cleanup in Start, select the drive, then choose Clean up system files for additional items such as old update packages.

6. Uninstall apps you don't use

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort by size, and uninstall large apps and games you no longer need.

7. Find and remove duplicate files

Windows has no built-in duplicate finder, and duplicates of photos, videos and downloads can quietly use a lot of space. Duplicate File Cleaner Pro compares files by content, finds similar photos and removes empty folders, and you review everything before it goes to the Recycle Bin. 8. Clean out the Downloads folder

Open File Explorer, go to Downloads, switch to Details view and sort by Size or Date modified. Old installers and archives can usually go.

9. Use OneDrive Files On-Demand

If you use OneDrive, right-click large synced folders and choose Free up space. Files stay visible and download when you open them.

10. Move large media to another drive

Move video and photo libraries to a second internal or external drive. You can also change where new content is saved in Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.

What not to delete

  • Anything inside C:\Windows, C:\Program Files or C:\ProgramData.
  • The page file (pagefile.sys) and hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) should not be deleted by hand. Windows manages them.
  • Duplicate-looking files inside app folders. Programs often need their own copies.

Frequently asked questions

What is taking up space on my Windows 11 PC?

Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows shows how much space apps, temporary files, documents, pictures, videos and other categories use. Select a category to see details.

Is it safe to delete temporary files in Windows 11?

Yes. Temporary files listed in Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files are safe to remove. Read each item first; for example, the Downloads folder may be listed and contains your own files.

Can I delete the Windows.old folder?

Yes, once you are sure you don't want to roll back a Windows upgrade. Remove it through Temporary files ("Previous Windows installation(s)") or Disk Cleanup rather than deleting it manually.

Does Windows 11 remove duplicate files?

No. Neither Storage Sense nor Disk Cleanup looks for duplicate copies of your files. Use a dedicated tool such as Duplicate File Cleaner Pro.

How much free space should Windows 11 have?

Keep at least 10 to 15 percent of the system drive free. Windows needs room for updates, and very full drives slow down.
