To find duplicate and similar photos on Windows, use a photo-aware duplicate finder such as Duplicate File Cleaner Pro: choose Image files, turn on Smart Similar Image Detection, scan your Pictures and backup folders, then keep the best version of each photo and send the rest to the Recycle Bin.

Why photo libraries fill up with duplicates

  • Repeated imports. Plugging a phone or memory card in several times can copy the same photos again.
  • Several sync services. Photos synced through more than one cloud app often land in different folders.
  • Edits and exports. Editing apps save new versions, and sharing creates resized copies.
  • Burst shots. Many near-identical frames of the same moment.
  • Mixed formats. Phones may store a photo as HEIC and export or share it as JPG.

Step-by-step: clean up duplicate and similar photos

  1. Back up your photos

Before a big cleanup, make sure your photo library is backed up to an external drive or cloud storage.

  2. Select Image files

Open Duplicate File Cleaner Pro and choose Image files. It covers JPG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, HEIC and RAW formats such as CR2, NEF and ORF.

  3. Turn on Smart Similar Image Detection

Tick Enable Smart Similar Image Detection to find photos that look alike, not just exact copies.

  4. Add your photo folders

Select your Pictures folder plus any phone import, camera or backup folders, then select View Files.

  5. Review matches

Select Find Duplicates. For each group, keep the highest-quality or edited version you want and tick the others.

  6. Delete to the Recycle Bin

Delete the selected copies using the Recycle Bin option so you can restore anything removed by mistake.

Tips for photographers

  • RAW files are large, so duplicate RAWs free the most space. Keep the RAW original if you might re-edit.
  • Scan your working library and your backup drive separately. Duplicates between a library and its backup are intentional.
  • Sort decisions by quality: keep the highest resolution and the edited version you share.

After the cleanup

Empty the Recycle Bin once you have checked your library, then remove leftover empty folders. For more ways to reclaim space, see How to Free Up Disk Space on Windows 11: 10 Safe Methods, or read the general duplicate file guide for documents, videos and downloads.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between duplicate and similar photos?

Duplicate photos are identical files. Similar photos show the same image but differ in resolution, compression, format or small edits, so exact file matching will not find them.

Can Windows Photos find duplicate pictures?

The Windows Photos app does not have a dedicated duplicate or similar photo finder. Use a tool such as Duplicate File Cleaner Pro.

Does it find duplicates between HEIC and JPG copies?

Exact-match scanning only finds identical files. Turn on Smart Similar Image Detection to find the same picture saved in different formats or sizes, then review the matches.

Which photo should I keep?

Usually the one with the highest resolution, the original RAW file if you edit photos, or the edited version you actually use. When in doubt, keep both.
