Overview

ClutterLens is a native macOS utility that helps you find duplicate files and reclaim storage space on your Mac. Select the folders you want to check, let ClutterLens scan them, review the duplicate groups it finds, compare files, and safely remove the copies you no longer need. All analysis happens locally on your device, so your files stay private and never leave your Mac.

Features

  • Duplicate file detection – content-based scanning finds true duplicates, not just matching names.
  • Multi-folder scanning – scan several folders or drives in a single pass.
  • Safe review workflow – review and confirm every group before anything is removed.
  • Fast scanning – an efficient engine designed for speed on modern Macs.
  • Local processing – everything runs on your Mac; files are never uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does ClutterLens find duplicate files?

ClutterLens analyzes the actual content of your files rather than relying on file names alone. It compares files within the folders you select and groups true duplicates together so you can review them before removing them. All of this analysis happens locally on your Mac.

Are my files uploaded to the internet?

No. ClutterLens performs all scanning and analysis locally on your Mac. Your files and their contents are never uploaded to any server or shared with any third party.

Is my data private?

Yes. ClutterLens does not require an account, does not collect personal information, and does not use analytics or tracking. It uses Sentry only for crash reporting, and that diagnostic data never includes your file contents. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.

Can I scan external drives?

Yes. You can select external drives and connected storage as scan locations, as long as they are mounted and you grant ClutterLens permission to access them.

Can deleted files be recovered?

ClutterLens lets you review duplicates before removing them and is designed for safe deletion. Depending on your settings and macOS, removed files may be moved to the Trash, from which they can be restored until the Trash is emptied. Once the Trash is emptied, recovery may not be possible, so always review your selections carefully.

How long does scanning take?

Scanning speed depends on the number and size of files in the folders you select and the speed of your drive. ClutterLens uses a fast scanning engine, but very large libraries or slower external drives will take longer to process.

What file types are supported?

ClutterLens can detect duplicates across a wide range of file types, including images, documents, videos, audio, and other common formats, because it compares file content rather than relying on a specific extension.

Why are some files not shown?

Files may not appear if they are unique (no duplicate exists), if they are located outside the folders you selected, or if macOS permissions prevent access to certain protected system locations. Make sure you have granted ClutterLens access to the folders you want to scan.
